Estate Sales Are for the Living Too

Hand-Picked by Heidi

When most people think of estate sales, they think of endings. I used to think that too, until I had one of my own. When we decided to remodel our home, we knew we were facing over a year of construction. Storage costs. Temporary living. The slow weight of holding onto everything “just in case.”

So we made a different decision: We let it go.

Nearly everything we owned - dishes, pots and pans, towels, books, toys, furniture, even architectural elements like doors, banisters, and light fixtures. We kept the irreplaceable: photographs, personal mementos, and (most of) our clothing.

But beyond that, it was a complete reset. For me, this wasn’t just a life decision, it was also a professional one.

As someone who sources, sells, and tells the stories of vintage pieces through Hand-Picked by Heidi, I saw this as a real-time case study. And what I learned surprised me.

Hiring the Right Estate Sale Company Is Everything

The most important decision we made was hiring professionals and trusting them. They came in, priced everything, staged the sale, and managed the entire process. I made a conscious choice not to micromanage - and that made all the difference. They know what sells. They know how to price. And they know how to move volume quickly. Yes, they take a percentage (often significant), but what they provide in return - time, expertise, and momentum, is invaluable.

What Sells Is Not What You Think

If you think your highest-end items will be the first to go… think again.
Here’s what sold immediately:
Everyday glassware
Tupperware
Plants and pots
Kitchen basics

Meanwhile: Larger, expensive furniture pieces (like our Restoration Hardware outdoor table) lingered. Estate sales reward practicality. People come looking for usable, approachable pieces - not just statement items.

People Buy Stories Even If They Don’t Know It

One of the hardest moments for me was watching my antique olive jars sell. Beautiful, storied pieces I had sourced and loved. And yet, I watched people pull the plants out and carry them off like treasure. It reminded me of something important:

People may not know the full history of an item, but they feel something when they see it.

Everything Finds a Next Life

One of the most unexpected (and comforting) parts of the process was seeing where everything went. Our front door. Our banisters. Our light fixtures. Even vanities from our kitchen and bathrooms. All of it found new homes. And that reframed the experience for me - not as loss, but as continuation.

The True Value Is Momentum

Yes, estate sale companies take a percentage. But they also handled everything, including a full cleanout at the end. Within days, our home was empty and ready for demolition. No storage. No lingering decisions. No drawn-out process. Just forward motion. And that kind of clarity is worth more than most people realize.

Standing in an empty house at the end of it all was both unsettling and freeing. Less to manage. Less to hold. More intention moving forward.
And that’s when it clicked:
Estate sales aren’t just about what’s left behind. They’re for the living, too.
